What is Soles & Souls?

Soles & Souls is about walking! It's about walking on the South Downs and in the Sussex countryside, through fields and woodland, in order to wind down and switch off from everyday preoccupations. Soles & Souls is about being in nature and being quiet in nature, to notice what’s around us, and to attune our senses to what we see, hear and feel.

Souls & Souls' more mindful approach to walking makes it different from many walking groups where chat may override the opportunity to notice the subtleties of what’s going on. As part of each walk there are periods when you have the chance to walk without talking in order to really appreciate the surroundings.

Who enjoys walking with Soles & Souls?

Anyone who likes walking in nature, and wants to experience it to the full, whether just to hear the birds and feel the wind in their hair, or to clear their head of the clutter of work or everyday life. Walkers need a reasonable level of health, but don’t have to be super-fit. And they have to be old enough to understand the ethos behind Soles & Souls.

What does it cost?

Each walk is individually priced, and some include the cost of tea and scones at the end. Click on The Walks, left, for a full list of upcoming walks and details of how to book.

What do I need to bring?

  • Sturdy, comfortable shoes – if it has rained, day hikers or walking boots are best, but if it has been dry, trainers or even hiking sandals are fine.
  • Clothing that is warm or flexible enough for the weather.
  • A bottle of water if the weather is warm, and a snack if you’re prone to feeling peckish en route.
  • A willingness to enjoy the walk!

Who's behind Soles & Souls?

Soles & Souls is the creation of Louise Gorst, a lifelong walker who has always revelled in the meditative nature of walking, and wanted to open it up to others, particularly those who don’t feel comfortable walking alone in the countryside. Born and raised at one end of the South Downs in Hampshire, she now lives at the other end in East Sussex. In between she has walked extensively throughout the country and also abroad. She has many years’ experience teaching in adult education and leading group workshops.
